we sat down with ford, general motors, and chrysler, our membership made sacrifices so we could get more economic development, more product, investment. billions of dollars is going into michigan because of unions and collective bargaining helping not just union workers but workers, all workers throughout the state. and you know, chris, and i know, in right to work states, average income is down, average wages is down, not as much pension or retirement security is in union states, less spending on k through 12 education, less spending on infrastructure. why? because workers make less, less tax revenue coming in. right to work is bad for americans. >> why do people like the koch brothers oppose unionization, mr. hagerstrom? >> unions will continue to thrive and to go forward. this gives individuals the right to determine what happens to their hard-earned money. you do not have to give your hard-earned money to a private organization to keep your job. it's that simple. it's that simple. this is going to move michigan forward. it's going to move our state forward, allow us to compete for gr

gm, chrysler were all on the brink of failure and if they failed, the suppliers and distributors getting the business from those countries, they would have died off, too. even ford could have gone down. production halted. factories shuttered. once proud companies shopped up, sold off for scraps. and all of you, the men and women who built these companies with your own hands, would have been hung out to dry. and everybody in this community that depends on you, restaurant owners, storekeepers, bartenders. they -- their livelihoods would have been at stake, too. so i wasn't about to let that happen. i placed my bet on american workers. we bet on american ingenuity. i'd make that same bet any day of the week. three and a half years later that bet is paying off. this industry's added over 250,000 new jobs. american auto industry is back. and companies like diamler know you're still a smart bet. they could have made their investments somewhere else but they didn't. and if you ask them whether it was a tough call, they tell you it wasn't even close. so the word's going out all around the world.

, they also put out a radio ad that said the same thing, and they continued to repeat it even after chrysler and the fact checkers had said it was simply not true. jeep was actually expanding its production in the u.s. the reason it was thinking of building, that it's planning to build a plant in china is to meet the increased demand for jeeps in china, so it was just blatantly false and yet they persisted with it. >> you know what's interesting, too, remember when the chrysler ceo, sergio marchione had to put out a statement basically saying, liar, liar, pants on fire, this is not going to happen. that's never, or more nicely i'm obliged to unambiguously restate our position. jeep production will not be moved from the united states to china. it is inaccurate to suggest anything different. there were strategists who were stunned that this ad, that this was being said, because they thought it was kind of signaled a desperate move. what was the runner-up, what was the next runner-up that could have been picked as the biggest lie? >> well we had ten finalists and i should note that we had a rea

for everyone from public school teachers that are unionized to autoworkers on the line at gm, ford or chrysler. interestingly, though, today, too here, brooke, you had fellow union workers protesting that aren't even part of the legislation. it does not apply to firefighters or police officers. but yet here today we found firefighters who were protesting this saying this is bad for workers across michigan. and nationally. i want you to listen to ted coakley, he's one of those and he explains why. does this mean the gbeginning o a death of unions in the country? do you think it is that big symbolically? >> i think things like this are waking the sleeping giant. i think workers and working families are tired of losing. they want a fair share of the prosperity of this state, and this country, and i think that's going to help build the union movement. >> reporter: -- from this right to work legislation. why are you here? >> that's correct. as of right now we're exempt from this legislation. but it doesn't change the fact that we want to be here to support all our brothers and sisters in the unions
